Chapter Seventeen
Choosing Joy when you live in chaos
But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality.
2 Corinthians 8:14
For most of us, clutter can squelch our joy. We can try to block it out of our minds and not let it bother us. But in reality, if we have a lot of clutter in our lives, whether is physical or mental, we need to clean it out.
Physical Clutter
If you have so much stuff in your house that it becomes cluttered, you need to start cleaning it out and letting it go. It will bring immense relief when you see the progress of decluttering. This can be done one area and one small step at a time. First, walk through your house with a notepad and pen. Stand in the middle of the room and look around. Do you see things that do not bring you joy, that are weighing you down and need to go? Would someone else think it looked cluttered? Make a list of what clutter needs to go and what needs to be done to the room to make it look neater. Do this for every room in your home. If you have a garage, go out there and do the same thing. If you have a mudroom or front porch, make a list there. Sometimes a room might need to be rearranged for better flow or the items need to be organized in a more efficient way. âA place for everything and everything in its placeâ is a good motto to live by. If you want to have âBeforeâ and âAfterâ pictures, I suggest you take the âBeforeâ pictures now. It is a good idea to have pictures of each room in your home. You never know when you might need these for another purpose. One time, our house flooded, and it was helpful to have pictures and an inventory of all of our belongings.
Over the summer, I wanted to declutter our garage. I had a plan for doing this in short sessions over the course of the summer. It was so freeing to let go of stuff that had been out there for years. Clothes that no longer fit me or the children were given away. I was able to bless other people with our abundance. In the process, I let go of the guilt that I was carrying because I had so much stuff out there that I wasnât using. It was an amazing journey to GIVE AWAY, THROW AWAY, and PUT AWAY. I also found treasures like jeans that fit my young adult son and pants for my youngest son who was getting too tall for the pants in his closet. He helped me fill up a bag of clothes that no longer fit him. When we clean out like this, we make it fun by playing music and doing a fun activity when we are finished.
